The squirrel

A squirrel always reminds me of that one day, which will go down in history of the Hughes’ house (animals seem to be magnetically attracted to our little home). It all started on a very hot summer day. All the windows were down and the squelching heat seemed to pulsate around us. We were cleaning around the house, doing odd jobs and a little spring fling until it happened. From one of the upstairs rooms, a predator lurked (he must have come in through the window). Just waiting to give us the excitement of the day (when I mean excitement I mean EXCITEMENT!), it came down step by step until a defining shout rang out over the heat waves and found us running at the sound (our neighbors probably heard it). “There’s a squirrel in the house!” I just remember the trouble we had in getting that thing outside! Everybody was at a door swinging it open, trying to herd the frightened squirrel it towards the door at no avail. Clinging to the couch it made a jump into the kitchen. I can just see it now - legs in all directions trying to cope with the slippery floor, his eyes wild. When he saw me he tried to make a turn, which landed him belly first sprawled. He franticly scrabbled for grip (it looked like he was swimming! J). Finely after 10 minutes, he was free. That poor guy; he’s never going to come near our house again! But all in all, chasing him around gave some more sweat on our backs, and it did give us something to talk about while drinking some fresh lemonade ( that felt so good!).
In our past history we have had many various kinds of wild birds, dogs, mice, frogs, chipmunks and even a crayfish crawling about inside our house uninvited. And that’s not counting all the bugs and the huge bees. However, this one about the squirrel is my favorite!
Oh, and we have many accounts of animals outside of our house in the yard; like one time a herd of horses thought our grass looked quite yummy. Now that was an adventure, especially when they decided to hitch-hike on Woodville Road! And another event when a mysterious cow passed through our yard. We also have many accounts with foxes and dogs eating our chickens, a bear strolling up from our swamp, and encounters with a rabid raccoons. These are other stories for another time!

Christians are supposed not merely to endure change, nor even to profit by it, but to cause it.

This is probably what the puppy is going to look like !
